Welcome! I am the Fontana Vecchia, located in the heart of Vetrale’s historic centre. They are an iconic symbol of this village, steeped in history and legend.

The Legend of the Old Fountain

According to an ancient legend, I quenched the thirst of a group of Roman veterans who came from nearby Gioi, where a garrison of the imperial army was located. These veterans were considered the founders of Vetrale, and since then, my presence has been of great importance to the local community.

A Historical and Cultural Heritage

Today, I have a special historical, cultural and artistic significance for my country. I am well maintained and immersed in nature, among flowers and trees that offer me shade during the hot season. My spring has two continuous jets that feed three communicating pools. A quiet space opens up before me, where only the sound of the water interrupts the stillness of a landscape that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Proximity to Holy Sites

Near me stands the Chapel of Our Lady of Grace and from here I can admire the ancient Church of Saint Elijah the Prophet, patron of fire, rain and drought. These sacred places are an integral part of the landscape around me and add an extra layer of spiritual meaning to my existence.

Daily Life Around the Fountain

On hot summer days, I often see the three sisters Donatella, Raffaella and Jusy playing with my water, merrily ascending and descending the steps that adorn me. Meanwhile, grandmother Rosetta and grandfather Donato, sitting on the steps, tell stories of the past, when they too came to fetch water with barrels and jars to meet family needs.

A Time of Essential Utility

Once upon a time, water was essential for the inhabitants of Piano Vetrale. It was used to water animals and wash clothes in a stone wash-house, before the advent of modern washing machines and running water in homes. I admired the skill with which the women carried vats, barrels and jars of different sizes on their heads, displaying enviable balance. I wonder if people capable of such skills still exist today.

The Importance of Water Conservation

Today, some of my water is used to water the plants in the neighbouring fields, but much of it leaks into the ground. To cope with periods of drought, it would be desirable to build tanks again to collect my water, the ‘blue gold’ for man, and use it at the right time.
