Welcome! I am the Monks’ Fountain, a historical spring located on the property of the monks of Saint Augustine, whose monastery stood on the hill of Santa Domenica. To visit me, you can find me in Via Garibaldi, near the road to Perito.
My Historical Importance
At one time, Orria had no aqueduct, and I was one of the few fountains from which drinking water could be drawn. The women of the district would gather around me, sharing stories and moments of life. After a day in the fields, they often waited their turn to fill their jugs and jars, chatting and socialising.
Cleaning and Childhood Games
Every May, my cleaning with lime was a much-awaited event for the boys in the village. During this process, it was common to find freshwater snakes inside me, which the boys played with, as they had no television, internet or mobile phones at that time. Even a simple rag ball or buttons torn off their clothes were enough to amuse them.
Use of My Water
My water was essential for the Ruggiero family, who used it to tan animal skins. In their basement, there is still a basin where my water was used to wash the hides after the necessary treatments. Shepherds also used to stop here with their flocks to water their animals.
My Role Today
Today, I have lost some of my original importance. My water is mainly used to water neighbouring vegetable gardens. However, I could regain my former value with a few improvements.
An Appeal to Gabriel
Dear Gabriel, who often passes by and lives on the same street as me, I ask you to help me return to my former glory. Beautify me with lights, flowers, waste baskets and some swings for the children. Enhance me with an area for pleasant picnics. My water could be better utilised, and by making me more beautiful, I could become an attraction for tourists. Many cyclists and motorcyclists who pass by here do not know I exist.
